André Maillé was born and raised in Lac Simon, Quebec, and is the third of five children.
André's passion and aptitude for sport developed at a very young age. Throughout his school years he participated in hockey and athletics and played for school and local teams. As a young man he continued to participate in these sports at higher levels of competition and it was between 1973 and 1976 that glimpses of a future as a competitive athlete began to occur.
As a member of the Papineau Minor Hockey League, his competitive spirit and desire to be the best he could be emerged. He achieved many accomplishments, including the Top Scorer and Most Valuable Player trophies. He was offered the chance to attend a hockey training camp with a Quebec Junior A team. Much to his father's dismay, André turned down the opportunity in order to pursue his new interest in athletics, a a sport he loved largely because it allowed him to focus on his individual athletic abilities and focus more on self-training.
André excelled as one of the track's star athletes. He won 2 gold medals for the 100 and 200 meter relay at the Quebec Games in 1974 and 1975. For approximately 20 years, André held the 200 meter cadet record. It was during this time, as a track competitor, that he began using weights to strengthen his leg muscles and improve his speed on the track. He noticed that he was able to push himself further, control and direct his training better as an individual athlete than as a member of a team. He was offered a scholarship to UCLA for their track team, and again, he declined.
Now moving into bodybuilding, he quickly competed at the national level. André placed 2nd at the C.B.B.F Canadian championships in 1980, 1981 and finally, he won the title in 1982. This victory will allow him to qualify for his very first international presence. Around the same time, André completed and obtained a degree in business administration specializing in marketing from the University of Quebec.
His years as a national competitor allowed André to have more professional opportunities. Reaching the first national ranking allowed André to go even further in his environment to prepare for the world level. In 1982, in his very first international participation, he placed 5th at the IFBB world championship, which took place in Brugge, Belgium.
It was shortly after this competition that André focused on the study of sports and received his diploma in fitness training from the Ben Weider Institute in Montreal in 1984. Around the same time At the time, André pursued other interests and obtained a theoretical degree in Ground School for Flying in addition to another degree in science real estate.
His next competition was in London, England in 1985, where André placed third in the Mr. Universe competition. His achievements in bodybuilding so far were not enough for this determined athlete. In 1986, his efforts and desire to make the most of his work were finally rewarded when he won the prestigious Mr. World title in Las Vegas, Nevada, taking first position in the Heavyweight category and he was also crowned Champion All Categories. With this success came the recognitionbirth and status of a world-class, professional athlete. This led to greater visibility in the media and between the years 1986 and 1995, André was the subject of numerous articles, seminars and attracted the attention of local, national and international magazines.
André's title has allowed him to tour extensively in around 20 countries as a sports and fitness representative, as well as continue to compete at the professional level. It is interesting to note that few athletes have lasted 3 decades as a competitor.
Although his injuries forced him to retire early, he continues to participate in bodybuilding competitions as a judge and promoter. Since 2002, it has organized numerous championships, including the Classique André Maillé.
